My Healing Journey

After graduating high school in 2003, I thought I wanted to be a nurse, I am a natural caregiver and my mom was a nurse. I was accepted to Simmons College, to become a nurse practitioner. I had a very hard time adjusting to living in Boston, and only lasted one semester. My mom suggested I try cosmetology, I excelled in school and after passing my state boards licensing I went to apprentice as a Color Specialist because I felt more confident in cutting and shaping. I worked and trained for a year then formed my own business, renting booths in several salons and working successfully.

During my time as a hairstylist my passion became therapeutic. It wasn’t only coloring or morphing hair, it was about creating change in order for the client to float away feeling cleansed and new, physically and mentally more confident. The client spent anywhere from 45-90 minutes in reflection, talking with me about their life and current issues. I would coach and coax, helping them to solve problems and sharing advice, while revealing the inner beauty and allowing the external to reflect that. It truly was hair therapy…

To further open my creativity, in 2009 I decided attend the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) to get an associate of arts in Visual Communications. The coursework gratefully re-opened a door to creativity which I had sealed in my childhood. Creating art is one of my greatest passions and have a long-term goal to get a masters degree in Art Therapy.

In 2011 I graduated FIDM Cum Laude, I sold my hairstyling clientele, moved to Davis, California and had my first son. My husband’s work took us to Little Rock, Arkansas for 2 years and in September 2013 we returned to San Diego and had our second son.

Then on April 12, 2014 I nearly died. Life Lesson, Never dive into anything head first without first testing the waters. I dove off of a pontoon boat into only 2 1/2 ft of murky dark water hitting my face into the mud. I have such a high pain threshold, that at the time I didn’t know that I was having a near death experience.

30 hours post-injury I walked in the ER complaining of muscle spasms and neck pain seeking prescribed solutions. They discovered I had fractured neck bones, slipped disks and one of the Vertebral Arteries to my brain was clotted and no longer functioning. I was operated on for 4 hours and now have my neck fused at levels C4-C6. This is what eventually led me to intuitive movements and using yoga as a healing tool.

10 days post surgery doctors placed me under a 5150 hold within a locked behavioral and drug abuse center for the standard 48 hours in order to detox. This was due to an unfortunate combination of prescription medications, my habitual abuse of cannabis, and the other mental factors of a near death experience. That would not be my last time in a psych ward and rehab situations. Over the next four years I tried outpatient and inpatient programs to manage my addiction to marijuana and mental health issues. I was riding the cycle of addiction rollercoaster, going off the rails and back on.

On April 20, 2018, I woke up again in a psych ward, this time I was held for 5 days as I detoxed from marijuana. I simply could not continue as I had been, I knew what was in jeopardy of losing if I did. I committed to 4 months of outpatient at a dual-diagnosis program and chose to utilize the 12 Steps of recovery to support me. I have gratefully be sober since then one day at a time with the help of collective power greater than myself.

Everything helped me to slow down, I started resting a lot more, taking care of the simple things, and keeping my life and thoughts as simple as possible. Learning and relearning how to be a functioning adult, mother, sister, wife, and be happy with myself as a soul existing in this universe has been a remarkable process.

My healing journey has only been possible with the creative processes and tools of yoga, the 12 Steps, and art therapy. The amount of classes I have taken is amazing. I hope that by sharing my journey I can help others to discover the healing spaces within themselves…
